Iomain Cholmcille XV – Alba v Èirinn
The Gaelic shinty-hurling international, Iomain Cholmcille, will be held in the Outer Hebrides for the first time with Alba playing Ireland’s representatives, Fir Uladh at Shawbost School Park on Saturday 9th November at 1.30pm.
This will be an exciting international sporting fixture plaed under compromise rules. The competitin was established to strengthen linkages between Gaels in Scotland and ireland. Iomain Cholmcille has received a great deal of praise and awards over the years since it was started in Oban in 2007 and although this is it’s first time being held in Lewis, it is a sort of homecoming because Lewis shinty players have been involved from the very start.
Alba will be managed by long term Gaelic shinty stalwart, Sean MacLeod, who played in the very first Iomain Cholmcille in 2007, and the Alba squad will have Lewis stars such as Paul Duke, Donny Murray, Callum MacRitchie, the Sinclair brothers and Hearach hero, Donnie MacRae appearing alongside superstars from the Premiership and National league such as Ross MacKinnon from Skye Camanachd, and Cailean MacInnes and Jamie MacLeod from Glasgow Mid-Argyll.
There will also be a youth competition for youngsters from Lewis and Harris at 12.30pm, as well as a come and try session with Alba women’s internationals Isabelle Law and our own Lucy MacLeod at 11.30. Both events are at Shawbost.
If there is bad weather, events will be shifted to Smith Avenue astro.
On the Friday night, there is a public ceilidh at An Lanntair with music from Crisdean Golly MacDonald and his group the Marag Dhubh Commandoes from 7 until 10.
