It was with profound sadness that we learned before our away game at Cannich last week of the passing of club volunteer Jim Gardiner.
Jim got into shinty because his grandchildren played for Lochbroom, but he became a fervent supporter of Camanachd Leòdhais, travelling to Shawbost on countless occasions to support us and there weren’t many things in life that pleased him more than watching a Dubh Is Gorm win.
We could always count on Jim whenever we needed him. He spent years giving up his Saturdays to drive us all over the country. If you are a shinty player that has visited Lewis to play us, there is every chance you were taken to Shawbost and Tarbert by our very own Jim.
We are going to miss his wisecracks and his laughter on the sidelines at Shawbost and on the minibus. Our thoughts are with his wife Babs and all of his extended family. A tribute is planned for our home game versus Lochaber.
We will forever be indebted to Jim for all his contributions to the club. When he was being thanked recently for supporting the club, he simply responded “Always”.
Whenever we think about all the miles we have to travel, all the battles we have on the shinty pitch, when we question whether it’s all worth it, we simply have to remember that one word from Jim.
“Always”
