June started off with a 3-1 defeat away to Lochaber with Donnie MacRae getting our only goal. The following week Strathglass visited the island and goals from Scott (2), Dukey, Donald Lamont, Donnie and Dylan made the difference in a 6-nil win on a very wet and windy day.
The following week was one of the great events of club history, a first ever win over Kingussie. The final result was 5-4, and goals from Paddy Wilson (2), Dukey, Scott and Donnie saw us over the line in a game that ebbed and flowed either way.
Sadly Caberfeidh conceded a walkover the week after, but the next weekend it was a Dubh is Gorm goalfest with a 7-nil show against Boleskine, a Donnie hat-trick, a Dukey double and goals from Ryan and Paddy W.
The only league game this July was a 5-2 win over Inverness. Not a vintage performance by any means, but again Donnie scored 2, with Harrison, Donald L and Callum MacRitchie also scoring. There was an interesting Lewis connection to Inverness’ first goalscorer – Jason McLeod played for Stornoway Shinty Club back in the nineties when his father Callum McLeod was stationed in Lewis and helped coach during the 90s revival.
Dukey and Donnie are battling it out, not just for topscorer for club, but also for top scorer in the league with a couple of Kingussie players.
The only other shinty action this month will be the HebCelt Cup on Saturday 20th July at Bayhead against Uist. It should be another classic in front of a big crowd on Festival Saturday.
