The 2014 Craig Morrison Stornoway Sixes will take place this Saturday 21 June at Stornoway Primary School, starting at 11am.
A dedicated and passionate shinty player, Craig Morrison passed away at the age of 20 in 2009. After a period of mourning, it was felt that it would be appropriate for his teammates to put forward a Memorial Shield and so, around the first anniversary of Craig’s passing, the first Craig Morrison Sixes were held in 2010.
This first event attracted a very strong field, Skye Camanachd, Lochcarron and Stromeferry No Ferry United, which combined Kinlochshiel, Lochbroom and Uist, ensuring that all the West Coast Clubs were united in playing for Craig. Skye A won a great day’s shinty.
The demands of the first league season in 2011 saw a fully local tournament with Lewis B lifting the trophy.
2012 was unfortunately left fallow but this renewed the determination to bring the tournament back with a bang in 2013. The 2013 tournament attracted Kincraig and Uist and it was eventually won by Lewis A.
This year’s tournament will again have local flavour, with teams from Point and Harris competing, reminiscent of the 2007 Lewis Sixes which was won by Lochs.
The club as a whole still feels the loss of Craig keenly. Our thoughts go out to his mother, father and siblings and we hope that the tournament will continue to serve in his memory for as long as shinty is played in the Western Isles.
